Colons

Colons

A colon always introduces something: an explanation, bullet points, or a list. In the previous sentence, for example, the colon showed that what followed was a list of examples. There’s no need to use a capital letter after a colon: that is American usage. See the entry on speech for how to use a colon to introduce a quotation, and the entry on bullet points for more examples.
