Ranges

Ranges

Ranges can be indicated by hyphens, with the hyphen replacing the phrases ‘from x to y’ or ‘between x and y’:

‘Turnover is growing by 5-10% per year.’

Or:

‘We have 3,000-6,000 different products in stock at any time.’

In general, it is better to spell ranges out in words. Never use a mixture of phrase and dash. Say ‘He was 40-45 years old’ or ‘He was between 40 and 45 years old’, but not ‘He was between 40-45 years old’.
