Compare to and compare with

Use ‘to’ when comparing two very different types of thing, as in the metaphorical phrase: ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ Use ‘with’ when the things are very alike, as in the concrete: ‘Earnings this year were low compared with last year’s’.
