Auxiliary verbs

Auxiliary verbs

Auxiliary verbs help other verbs. English uses auxiliary verbs a lot – to show tense, among other things. So, if we take the verb ‘to write’, without using auxiliary verbs we can only say ‘I write’ or ‘I wrote’. With them, we can say ‘I have written’, ‘I am writing’, ‘I will write’, ‘I could write’, ‘I would have written’, and ‘I might have been writing’. All the words in italics are auxiliary verbs.
