i.e. and e.g.

i.e. and e.g.

I.e. stands for id est, which means “that is” (or “that is to say”). e.g. stands for exempli gratia, which literally means “for the sake of example”. There is a problem with both abbreviations, i.e. they break the flow of the text. It’s better to spell out what you mean, e.g. by writing “that is” or “for example”.

Use points after each letter – i.e. rather than ie.
