Mitigate and militate

Mitigate and militate

Mitigate means soften or make less severe, as in mitigating circumstances – i.e. circumstances that make the crime less severe. Militate means the opposite – it comes from the same word as military, and literally means to serve as a soldier. For example, “Its complexity militates against its success.” Never, ever use the phrase “mitigates against”.
