Nouns – subjects and objects

Nouns – subjects and objects

Nouns are people, places, animals or things. There are two tests for them:

  • They take actions: I run; he plays cricket; she likes chocolate; the river flows.
  • They can be described: I am honest; he is stupid; she is graceful; the river is serene.

A noun or pronoun is the subject of the sentence when it is taking an action, as in the examples above. Who is playing cricket? He is. So he is the subject of the sentence.

Sentences often also have an object. This is also a noun, but instead of taking an action, the action is being performed on it. What is being played? He is playing cricket. So cricket is the object of the sentence.
